Across the Pacific, Mac Allen enters a Los Angeles police station. A gurney rushes past carrying FBI agent Maria Garcia—his former love—wounded by the gunman inside. Her sapphire ring snags on his cuff and holds them together for one breath.

Chief Frank Adamo’s daughter Ellen is trapped in the cafeteria with a gun to her head. Her estranged husband, Officer Peter Buckley, is holding it. Ellen once trusted Mac as her therapist, and Adamo believes Mac is the only person who can bring her out alive.

Mac is fighting to regain custody of his own six-year-old daughter, Ruby. Adamo does not need to make the bargain aloud: save Ellen, and the chief will remember.

Mac enters without a vest. He shows Buckley the brace beneath his shirt, removes his shoes, and lowers himself into a chair. Hot coffee spreads across the floor and soaks his sock. Mac never looks away.

Buckley silences his jackpot ringtone with his left hand. His watch is on his right wrist, and the gun is in that same right hand. He is a southpaw holding the weapon with his weaker side.

Outside, the tactical team prepares to fire. Inside, Mac sees a terrified gambler who has not decided how this ends.

Mac takes Buckley back to Kauai: the mist, the double rainbow, the proposal at Wailua Falls, and the ring hidden inside a lei. Buckley remembers the life he is about to destroy.

He confesses that he stole cash from the evidence room to buy Ellen’s ring. Her bare finger says everything. She never wanted the ring. She wanted him.

Buckley presses the weapon into Mac’s face. Mac answers in the only language the gambler can hear: one more hand, a clean game, no vig. Mac opens both palms. Ten seconds later, Buckley places the gun in them and lets go.

Mac walks out between Ellen and Buckley, one hand on each shoulder. Ellen runs into her father’s arms. Buckley is taken away. The station finally breathes.

Mac bends over in pain, still standing in wet socks. He watches a father hold his daughter while his own remains beyond his reach.

Mac’s license is gone, but Carl Jenkins still comes to the stripped office. Carl says he cannot keep doing this. Distracted and exhausted, Mac sends him away with an empty promise: “You’ll be fine.”

Carl leaves a hundred dollars. Flynn’s enforcer arrives and takes it, then admits his last job was the father of Tina Flynn’s best friend—a man who asked Jimmy too many questions.

The pale rectangle where Mac’s license once hung, Ruby’s nearly empty college fund, a Gamblers Anonymous book, and a worthless slot ticket are all that remain. Mac can read a stranger in seconds. He does not realize Carl has just said goodbye.

At the FBI field office, blood from Maria’s wound seeps through her slacks. An old photograph of her and Mac waits on her phone. She cannot delete it. She also cannot hide the pills tucked inside her tissue box; Agent Cox has already found them.

A conference-room board connects Jimmy Flynn, Tina Flynn, and Mac Allen. To the Bureau, Mac is a way into Flynn’s organization. To Maria, he is the man she still loves and the disaster pulling them back together.

Cox gives her one week to turn Mac. Her recovery, her career, and her unfinished love now share the same deadline.

Maria meets Mac beneath the desert sky and confronts him about Flynn, Tina, and the danger waiting in Macau. Mac finally tells her the truth: Flynn is threatening Ruby.

Their anger softens into the intimacy they never buried. Maria tells him her father no longer remembers her. Mac admits he does not know how Ruby is doing. The sapphire ring he gave Maria is still on her hand.

At 11:11, a shooting star crosses the sky. Mac reaches toward her with both palms. “Rain check,” Maria whispers before driving away. In the darkness, a black SUV watches them with an envelope marked “JF” on its dashboard.

Flynn tosses Mac an envelope containing a plane ticket to Macau. Violence could not get Chan the truth, but Mac can. Flynn reminds him that Tina trusted him—and now she is gone.

Mac asks whether Flynn killed his own daughter. Flynn says he does not kill girls, then quietly mentions how much Ruby loves the swings. Mac picks up the ticket.

When Flynn’s blanket tangles in his wheelchair and leaves him stranded, Mac refuses to help. For one silent beat, each man sees the other’s prison.

At the gate, Ruby FaceTimes Mac from the home he no longer shares. She holds up a blue stick-figure drawing and makes sure he understands: it is him, not her “new daddy.” Then the call ends before Mac can close the distance between them.

Mac calls Flynn’s private number just as the jetway door is closing. Jimmy answers. Mac says nothing. He runs for Flight 888 while Flynn’s rage tips his wheelchair and breaks his rosary across the floor.

In First Class, a glass of juice arrives from an unknown passenger. At the back of the cabin, Maria hides beneath a blonde wig, swallows her final pill, and follows Mac into the air.

Twenty-two hours later, Mac enters a Macau of loose roosters, Portuguese facades, egg-tart vendors, crowded streets, and impossible casino towers. Queen’s Palace glows purple in the distance like a private kingdom.

Edwin Lee waits at the airport in a black suit and bright yellow socks. His scarred knuckles and missing finger suggest violence. His silence suggests he is already studying the American he was sent to collect.

A text from Chief Adamo says Mac’s custody hearing is one week away. Then the limousine doors lock. Through the glass, Mac watches police crush an illegal dice game. Edwin gives him Macau’s first rule: gambling belongs inside the casinos now.

One week earlier, sixteen-year-old Tina Flynn walks toward a sun-baked Arizona mobile home while a black SUV idles three trailers away. She slips inside and throws the deadbolt.

At the kitchen table, Tina writes to the therapist who once protected her. She has proof that her father committed crimes. A dog barks. Tina freezes with the pen above the page. When the barking stops, she keeps writing.

She seals the letter and places it in the mailbox. By the time Mac leaves dinner in Macau, the envelope is waiting inside his shoulder bag.

In Edwin’s limousine, Mac finds a crystal bottle of Cedar Musk. Edwin tells him Chan banned the fragrance because it belonged to his wife’s lover. Mac quietly slips the bottle into his pocket.

Then he opens Tina’s letter. She is alive, and she has proof of her father’s crimes. Finding the casino thief is no longer Mac’s only reason to survive Macau.

Mac enters Queen’s Palace carrying Tina’s truth and the scent of Chan’s deepest wound.
